  • Popular Grain-Free Dog Foods May Be Linked to Heart Disease

Bison and chickpeas. Wild boar and sweet potatoes. Kangaroo and lentils.

Appears it's not so much grain-free as much as it's the kind of meat product and more prevalent in large breed dogs. There's also a potential link to abnormally low taurine levels. Chicken and beef are high in taurine. Rabbit and many other "exotic" meats in these boutique brands are not.

Anecdotally - and possibly unrelated - I was buying these dog foods for our dachshunds and they got to where they'd nibble and eventually not eat any of it. Their health appeared to be fine. Several months ago I ended up switching them to a diet of home cooked ground beef, pork or chicken with rice and mixed vegetables, supplementing it with a product called "Balance IT" - a powder that is a vitamin supplement. Their coats are shinier and fuller and they seem to really enjoy it.
I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're gonna feel all day. Frank Sinatra
