  • Burt Reynolds, Movie Star Who Played It for Grins, Dies at 82

Burt Reynolds, the charismatic star of such films as Deliverance, The Longest Yard and Smokey and the Bandit who set out to have as much fun as possible on and off the screen — and wildly succeeded — has died. He was 82.

Reynolds played football at Florida State and was a teammate and roommate of Lee Corso there. At one time Reynolds was a big deal in the movie and entertainment business. I liked the Smoky and the Bandit movies back when they were out. He also played the part of a porn producer/director very well in Boogie Nights. He was also a frequent guest on Johnny Carson. He didn't do too bad in the lady business either. He was either married or with Sally Field and Loni Anderson, among others, at different times or maybe at the same time, who knows? RIP Burt Reynolds
    Kentucky fan since 1971.

There was also some speculation that he and Dolly Parton were lovers at one time.

He had few women in his time to say the least.

He was an analyst with Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier for the 1977 Sun Bowl game that had LSU and Stanford playing in it. I haven't watched this game but I imagine it's a hoot.

At one time Burt Reynolds was the most in demand star in the business.
from Deliverance, the End( with Dom Delouise as sidekick, he was playing a man with terminal illness), the Longest Yard, the Bandit movies....he was everywhere.

He made the Trans-Am the most popular yard ornament in the south.

Although no one speaks much of it, Evening Shade was a good show....a bit of throwback to Mayberry days.

Quite a ride for a guy that never seemed to take things awfully serious.

Reynolds and Eastwood were the two different versions of the stereotypical male of the 70s.

I recall an interview that both were part of, and the question was regarding their early struggles. Reynolds and Eastwood had been fired on the same day - Eastwood because he talked too slow, his adam's apple stuck out too far and he had a chipped tooth. Reynolds was told he couldn't act as the reason for his firing.
As they left the studio, Reynolds told Eastwood he was in a helluva lot of trouble. Eastwood asked, How so? Reynolds responded, "I'll eventually learn to act, but you'll be stuck with that adam's apple."

Reynolds took any part he could get in the late 60s - often playing an indian or mexican in some of those westerns. He got his start as a stuntman and that's how he met Hal Needham, who was doing stunts on Have Gun, Will Travel, Gunsmoke and other westerns. Needham would go on to direct "Smokey and the Bandit" and a slew of other Reynolds movies.

Evening Shade only ran for 4 seasons, but garnered several Emmys and a Golden Globe.

The great thing about the Cannonball Run movies was the outtakes - in particular the ones featuring Reynolds and Dom DeLouise.

The last Reynolds movie I saw was actually pretty good - "The Last Movie Star" co-starring Arial Winter. It was a part ready made for him.

Painfully uncomfortable to watch. Burt Reynolds and Marc Summers get into a "fight" of sorts on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
Reynolds was going through a messy divorce with Loni Anderson at the time.
