  • In Ron Turcotte’s Own Words: His Ride Aboard Secretariat.

We’re coming upon the 50th anniversary of his incredible Triple Crown run. Some of us witnessed history that day.

The New York Racing Association concludes a series of diaries to help celebrate the 150th Grade 1, $1.5 million Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets on Saturday at Belmont Park. “In Their Own Words” features prominent owners, trainers, jockeys and horsemen as they re-live some of the most stirring moments in the rich history of […]

Great read, capcat, thanks for posting it. In my opinion, the greatest of all time.

When I graduated from UK's AG school I worked on a beef cattle farm in Woodford County. One day we took a ride to the KY State Horse Park to see "Big Red". Just a powerful experience. That horse was the most majestic, intimidating looking beast I had ever seen. I couldn't look over his back. Truly awe inspiring. His race at the Derby was legendary. Won by 31 lengths and a still record time. I'll never forget it.

He was amazing, on the track and in person. We went to see him at Claiborne Farm the year after he won the Triple Crown. I don’t think it was possible to fully take that moment in. In years to come, his autopsy showed his heart wasn’t enlarged, just big. He was born to run.

Of course I watched each leg of the triple crown Secretariat won. Then a few years ago watched the movie and cried through the Belmont Final Stretch. He was an awesome specimen and so athletic.
