  • Text messages released in Michael Avenatti case allege conversation with UK assistant

LEXINGTON - The text message from a Kentucky basketball assistant coach to Nike EYBL director Carlton Debose about the shoe company allegedly funneling money to AAU basketball coaches has been released as part of Michael Avenatti's motion to dismiss extortion charges against him.
The text message conversation on July 6, 2017 is between Debose and someone identified as "KP" in his phone. Kentucky basketball's associate head coach is Kenny Payne, and Avenatti's attorney characterized the text exchange as being with a UK basketball assistant in the motion to dismiss released Thursday.
In the exchange, Debose acknowledges payments to about "about 10" EYBL coaches who are "helping families to the total of about 200K annually."
KP responded, "Wow," then asks, "can it come back to hurt you?

Is Payne asking for anything there? It's hard to see what's being alleged. On the surface that looks like a normal text exchange.

Obviously it's best if your program and coaches never come up in these proceedings. But with my blue tinted glasses on I'll say that there's nothing particularly incriminating here for UK. This conversation--which is not likely the entire conversation--shows a coach communicating with a friend--or at least an acquaintance he knows well enough to call him "bro"--to be careful for his own sake and not get himself into trouble. Payne seems at least a little surprised to learn of the magnitude of the $ involved in the shady underground of how the business is done at that point. But nothing released here suggests he requested some of that $ be used to get a player to UK.

Of course UK is a Nike outfitted school and it would not be surprising if it comes out at some point that some of our players benefited from this system but this release doesn't even suggest it. It would be shocking if an assistant as involved in recruiting as KP is for him to not know the shoe company and AAU coaches pretty well.

Perhaps it's a favor from Avennati to KP or even Cal that more was not released for all I know, but this little tidbit just shows Payne learning a little of what was happening.

I agree that there's nothing incriminating for either UK, or coach Payne, at this point. It could, in my opinion, be a problem, however, for coach Payne if he applies for a HC position in the near future.

I think my glasses are blue as well. I suppose this shows KP was aware of something, but the text doesn't seem to show anything about involvement.

Nothing in this text to incriminate anybody from UK. Shows interest at best and if that's all there is we have nothing to worry about.

Again, blue tinted glasses and naivete acknowledged, I read it as Payne asking this guy who's asking for money so UK knows not to get involved with them. Given the timelines and the lists of who we stopped recruiting, this makes sense to me.

The KSR explainer kinda backs this up.

I think this is the most likely explaination. Cal has always been able to see what was around the corner for NCAA bb. I can totally see him thinking, we don't need to pay, when we know somone is asking for money, we back off.

I do think he/we are willing to ignore or turn a blind eye to Nike paying an elite player without our direct involvement and would have had Zion here in a heartbeat.

I think there's very little chance that we're completely clean here, but I highly doubt UK/Cal had any involvement in it.

Dwight's statement along with what the UK assistant said, makes perfect sense. As for the above statement, I also think we're dirty to a very small degree because as an AD once told me, if the NCAA digs deep enough every program no matter what division they're in, they will find dirt. I'm so glad our AD along with Sandy Bell, are on top of every sport at UK.
