  • Rick Pitino and St. John's

Looks like there are rumors that St. John's may be the destination for Pitino.

Makes sense. Low pressure, coaching in the Garden, ending his career where he started it, more or less.

Looks like Georgetown is going to hire Penn St.'s coach, so St. John's is the likely destination for Pitino.

Mike Anderson is going to leave St. John's having never taken them to the NCAA Tournament. They've only been one time in the last decade, and that's when Chris Mullin took them in his final year and lost in the First Four.

Which is all wild, because when I was a kid St. John's was one of the elite programs.

Mike Anderson has been pretty disappointing. At one point I thought he’d become one of the “really good coaches” and I thought Arkansas would be the place for him.

Also, I feel obligated to share that I still despise that 2004 loss to UAB . Squeaky Flipping Johnson.

It was a very significant loss for me (and I know for plenty of you guys, too). I was brought up watching UK, of course, and as we recently discussed, my earliest vivid memories are of the early 90s UK-Arkansas games, but that UAB game hurt. That was a formative time for me as a fan, and that Tubby era, despite their shortcomings, includes some of my favorite teams and players.

Probably the worst loss I've ever witnessed as a UK fan. Worse than Wisconsin, IMO, only because I loved that team so much.

Was walking around a week after that game thinking about it. Only time that's ever happened to me as a UK fan.

Why in the world Tubby let Nolan Richardson come to practice before the game still befuddles me.

I took a look at Jon Scott’s fabulous site just now to reference our history against St. John’s. We used to play them every year in the 40’s through 1952. We lost to their stacked team in 1985, a game that included stars like Chris Mullin, Walter Berry, and Mark Jackson. The Unforgettables beat them. Tubby lost to them in 2000. Cal beat them in 2012.

It was interesting that we played them so much through that span. I assume that was part UK seeking competition and part recruiting efforts.

Honestly each tournament loss from 2003-2005 was rough. It was a really fun stretch that is missing a banner. The teams were very likable.

One of the handful of games I can think of where an official literally lost the game for us.

There was a blown call late in that game that led to a St. John's desperation three. Then they won it.

IIRC the ref wrote an apology letter afterward saying he missed the call.

^ Another subplot of that game was that that St. John's team had Omar Cook, a player Kentucky fans swore would've come to UK if not for Saul Smith.

Should make dining out at Italian restaraunts in the NYC area more challenging.

And this is why I will always be for replay reviews. How can you not want calls that can be reviewed to be corrected? Eliminate as many errors as possible.

Ciach Rupp loved taking the team to play in NYC. Until the betting scandal.
