For some reason I want Rick to make one more tournament run. What is wrong with me?
Probably because I've been reminiscing on the '90's UK Basketball glory so much these past few years lol
I sort of feel like enough time has elapsed between his awfulness at UofL and now that I can get back to just respecting him as a coach.

With Jay Wright out of the Big East there's a void there for Pitino to take up. Right now it looks like Danny Hurley might be the new Wright but maybe Pitino can have a late-career surge a la Jim Calhoun.
I like Big East basketball. As a basketball-first guy, really as a basketball-only guy, I appreciate these schools who are built around really powerful basketball traditions.
I never had much animosity toward Pitino even at UofL but it was always nice to beat him. Moreso because the media fawned over him so much, even after Cal spanked him consistently. I remember stupid Jeff Goodman going on and on about what a great coach Pitino was after Cal whooped him in the Final Four.

Also, Cal should have taken a page from Pitino's book and stayed 8 years.
That 8th season would have been the Fox/Bam/Monk year. He could've gone out then and his legacy would be WAY different than it is now. Also our program would maybe be much stronger. Win-win.
As it stands he's going to have to have a late-career resurgence here to rescue that legacy--and UK. He went into the pandemic as probably the second best coach ever here. He's coming into 2023-'24 significantly lower than Pitino and lower than Tubby Smith/Joe B.

Pitino will win some games at St. John's but he's also a coach who demands hard work and discipline. That may work with lower level recruits but to win in the big time you still need top level elite recruits. Going to be a tough sell to get players to run through a wall for you when NIL and money is on the table, the best players are still going pro no matter who they play for or who coaches them, far different than a UK UL rebuild....
